Discussion About The Traffic Light Controller, Components, Objectives, Uses

The traffic lights adorning the modern city streets are not just for illumination purposes, the modern traffic controlling systems, fitted along with these lights help in the smooth flow of the traffic, which includes pedestrians, heavy and light vehicles across the roads. A variety of control systems including computerized control systems is used to ensure the safe and smooth movement of traffic. Modern control, coordination systems are fully automated and self-adjust to prevent delay caused by road traffic.

The objective of the traffic light controller is to offer a sophisticated coordination and control over traffic, simultaneously confirming that the traffic moves safely, smoothly across the roads. The device uses LED lights for indication, a micro-controller is also used for automatically changing signals periodically. The LED lights get to turn on or off automatically.

The important cities across the world have witnessed a surplus of traffic in recent years. Unless effective steps are taken, it is difficult to manage the traffic movement. The role of the traffic signal controller plays an important role in effective traffic management. Contemporary traffic control systems are available online. These products are the integral components of any intelligent transportation system.

There are many businesses which offer their customers, a range of traffic control systems. The control systems have the following specifications:-

Some traffic signal controllers have a large TFT LCD display

An intuitive touch-screen display, graphical programming of traffic signals

The signal has High brightness, contrast display for enhanced outdoor readability

The Web browser-based user interface allows the signal controller to be remotely programmed

Many of the modern traffic control systems use the Linux based OS.

Managing road traffic (pedestrian, vehicular traffic) prevents road accidents, other road disruptions. Traffic management is important for the general public.

The traffic control systems incorporate the use of close circuit camera (CCTV), they include other means of monitoring the movement of roadway (state/local) traffic. Traffic management incorporates efficient management of the flow of traffic, providing suggestions and advice related to traffic congestion. Traffic controlling is mostly an outdoor profession. The personnel involved in the job have to stay hours outside and for them, fatigue can be an issue. Their duty is to watch the traffic, control the traffic movement.

For the common public, it is imperative to adhere to traffic safety norms to avert any accidents. By using a zebra crossing or a flyover men and women can choose to stay safe from unnecessary traffic accidents.

Significance of Traffic Light Controllers Placed in Roads

The traffic which is present in the current scenario is at its all time high and this is because now almost everyone is having a vehicle with them also there are a lot of people who are having more than one vehicles with them and all these things have led to a really high traffic. Therefore there is a need of maintain and controlling this traffic in a proper way so that the traffic which is present on the roads can be functioned smoothly and that is why the role of Traffic Light Controllers is very important. To maintain the smooth running of the traffic at all the places there are these traffic signals installed and some traffic signals about which we all know are controlled using these Traffic Light Controllers only.

Traffic Signal Controllers

You must have observed that on a traffic signal, the light automatically changes its colour after a fixed period of time and also these time period are different for different locations and different traffic signals, so how is all this being managed and who is doing these changes? All these traffic signals are controlled and managed with the help of Traffic Signal Controllers. All the important things related to a traffic signal are maintained from these traffic signal controllers only. The engineers who are highly professionals and know their task perfectly design these Traffic signal controllers. They keep in mind all the different aspects of making these traffic signals while making these traffic signal controllers.

Traffic Control

The task of controlling the traffic in itself is a very huge task. Earlier the traffic police officers were assigned at different places to maintain the smooth running of the whole traffic. However, this was a really difficult task to maintain the traffic as it was not possible to have an officer at all the major lanes and that is why there comes the role of the traffic signals and as well as these traffic light controllers. These things have completely changed the scenario of the traffic as the traffic actually maintained and sorted to a very high extent after their occurrence. Traffic Control process is now highly simplified and has been made much easier for the people because of these traffic signals. There are still a lot of places where these traffic signals are yet to be installed but it is sure that these will be installed there too as the benefits which comes along these traffic signals are a lot.

How the Traffic Light Controller Works?

The number of vehicles on the roads has really increased by many folds in the past few decades. Everyone is now having their own vehicles with them and because of all this the traffic on the roads has increased a lot. In this case, the need of the traffic signals has really increased too. There are these traffic signals on all the major roads in order to avoid any kind of traffic and even the accidents which are caused because of this traffic. But have you ever thought that who is controlling all these traffic signals? How is making it possible, that one time the lights is green and after sometimes it becomes red. All these things are maintained with the help of a traffic controller.

Traffic Light Controller

It requires a lot of efforts to design a traffic light controller as the main task of a traffic light controller is to maintain the changing of the signals from time to time and from lane to lane. By doing this only, the traffic can be controlled. So, to make all these possible, the traffic light controllers are designed. For this a model is made, by the engineers that how will these traffic signals perform. There are various factors which are kept in mind while making these controllers.

Traffic Signal Controller

The factors which are kept in mind while making these traffic signal controllers are that for how long the light will remain red, green or yellow and this is decided on the basis of the traffic in a particular area. There are many other factors which are kept in mind while making these traffic signal controllers as the chances of mistakes while making these have to be reduced to the maximum. Therefore, to maintain the smooth running of the traffic at any of the places, these controllers are must as without these traffic signal controllers, the traffic signals can’t work and hence can result in a great chaos because of the traffic.

Traffic Control

The main motive of the traffic police is to control the traffic and to make the functioning of the traffic in the best possible way and in these case these traffic light controller works perfectly as they help in this traffic control. And once the traffic is controlled, we can avoid a lot of accidents and other problems which can often be seen on the roads.

LED Lights-Preferable Options to Use as Traffic Light Controller Systems

Since the beginning of 1990s, most of the cities belonging to both European and American countries have started replacing of incandescent types of traffic lights with few of the highly energy efficient and solid-state lighting systems or LED lights. This is because; with the passage of time, LED lights have undergone drastic improvements to become one among the powerful light sources to use as traffic light controller systems.

Because of the consistent advancement in the LED lighting technology and attempt of people to go green with LED lights, most of the street light projects going on now in both Europe and America choose for powerful LED sources. In other words, LED products have occupied the market of various mercury vapor-based light sources and high pressure of sodium lamps in gradual way.

Why LED is Used Popularly

Until now, about 80 percent of the traffic control projects have preferred for LED powered lights because of some strong reasons, which include the following-

Huge Energy Efficiency

Today, efficiency and power of LED lights exceed 100luminous per watt. In majority of street light products, power efficiency of light emitting diode ranges between 65lm per watt and 80 lm per watt. Even the efficiency is very much high as compared to any other mercury vapor type of lamp that comes with 30lm per watt.

Offers an Eco-friendly Solution

LED powered lighting systems provide eco-friendly solutions to users, as they are available as solid-state lighting sources.

Allows for Low Power Consumption

Most of the LED light sources used mainly as traffic signal controller systems are able to save usage of energy by more than 52 percent than any other traditional lamps comprised of mercury vapors, while 26 percent higher as compared to sodium lamps.

Possess Higher Lux for a Single Watt

Lights powered by light emitting diodes come with almost 2 times of higher Lux for a single wattage as compared to any mercury vapor form of street light. Experts have skewed the equivalent measurement for various high-pressure of sodium lamps by the help of hot spots, which bump up the rate of Lux but result in undesirable safety, visibility and wide range of glare problems.

Possess Relatively Long Lifetime

LED powered light sources and traffic-controlling systems come with relatively higher lifetime equal to 60,000 hours. Therefore, LED lights may possess life expectancy of about 15 years.

LED Traffic Light Controller – Making People’s Life Easy

The traffic light has many different names like a traffic signal, stop lights, etc. They are placed out there to control the traffic. The first traffic light appeared in the mid-1800's and consisted of two lamps, a red and a green one, like it is still commonly used nowadays in most countries. They are designed specifically for use as signalling devices and are generally positioned where the road intersects with other flows of traffic, whether it is motor vehicles or human traffic, such as pedestrian crossings, a crossroads or any other locations to control the flow of traffic.

LED Traffic light controllers are very common in built up areas and are a very effective way to control the flow of traffic at intersections. They give the traffic clear and simple instructions as to how to behave - who should proceed and who should stop. The only time you really need to show skill and judgement is when turning right at the traffic lights because unless there is a filter arrow showing, you have to give priority to oncoming vehicles. So in theory, junctions controlled by traffic lights should be the easiest type of intersection for learner drivers to deal with. However, many students have problems with traffic lights which cause them to fail their driving test.

The traffic control lights which are most commonly in use consist of a set of three lights, red, amber and green. They are generally set up in a vertical position with the red light at the top, amber light in the middle and the green light at the bottom. In some countries traffic lights may be set up horizontal.

When a vehicle approaches a set of traffic lights and the light on the signal is red, it is an indication to that vehicle to stop. The amber light indicates that the lights are about to change, either to red or to green depending on which part of the world you are in. When the lights change to green it is signalling that it is safe to proceed and the vehicle may continue its journey.

The variations in the use of traffic signal controller will vary depending on the country and any special needs for a particular intersection, for example special lights may employed for buses, pedestrians and bicycles etc; or special rules for controlling traffic which are turning in a particular direction. Some intersections can be quite complex and will make use of any combination of these.

The LEDs have truly brought a revolution to the traffic lighting industry. Whether it is signaling or countdown timers the LED proves to be the best.
